Squirrels and Other FurBearers John Burroughs
I just discovered Yesterday's Classics & have already fallen in love with them. This lovely little volume exemplifies why, with its empathetic & observant prose style, its keen eye & sense of wonder about the natural world & its inhabitants, and its overall design. The latter is distinguished by both full-page plates (B&W rather than color in my paperback edition, but still charming), and by the delightful spot illustrations amidst the text. While written for children, the end-of-the-century vocabulary & sensibility will appeal to many an adult reader as well. And while there's honest sentiment here, as might be expected from the period, there isn't much mawkish sentimentalism. Author John Burroughs acknowledges the reality of death among these furbearing fellow residents of North America. But the emphasis is on the behavior, traits, and beauty of the animals that he highlights. That, and a compassionate reminder that these are living creatures, each with its own fears, desires, qualities: and each deserving of respect. In this age of increasingly digital childhood, it's a valuable & necessary lesson for children … and for many adults, too.
This was my first book about the natural world from Yesterday's Classics, but it won't be my last. Highly recommended!
